In California, anyone who provides security guards or patrol services for compensation must hold a Private Patrol Operator (PPO) license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. There's no legal way around it — operating without one is a misdemeanor.

Do I really need a PPO to start a security company? +

Yes. In California, providing security guard or patrol services for compensation requires a Private Patrol Operator license from BSIS. Operating without one is a misdemeanor, so it's the first thing to get right.

Can you take the qualified manager exam for me? +

No — the exam must be taken by your designated qualified manager. What we do is prepare you thoroughly for it, since BSIS provides very little official study material and the test is timed.

What if I don't have the required experience hours? +
